Insights from NbSI’s Contribution to the Nature–Climate Dialogue at COP30
The Families for Nature Foundation is proud to support the work of Dr Aline Soterroni, Professor Nathalie Seddon, and the Nature-Based Solutions Initiative (NbSI) at the University of Oxford through its Scientists for Nature programme. Their joint contribution to a COP30 side event in Belém, Brazil, offered clear, research-based insights into how Brazil and the global community can more effectively connect climate and biodiversity strategies.
At the event, Dr Aline Soterroni and Professor Nathalie Seddon presented complementary perspectives shaped by their respective research fields but united by a common message: Brazil’s climate pathway is inseparable from the protection of nature and the rights of the communities who depend on it.
Their contributions highlighted several core themes:
- Nature as a foundation of Brazil’s net-zero ambition, with ecosystems playing a central role in mitigation, adaptation and resilience.
- The interdependence of ecological and social issues, including pressures on tropical landscapes, land conflicts, mercury contamination and risks faced by environmental defenders.
- The importance of research partnerships with Indigenous Peoples and local communities, recognising that successful solutions require both scientific and local knowledge.
The session, convened with Greenpeace International, WWF and Fundação SOS Mata Atlântica, gathered scientific, governmental and civil society insights. The discussion focused on the practical steps needed to align biodiversity and climate priorities in the lead-up to COP30.

The Families for Nature Foundation will host a virtual exchange with Dr Aline Soterroni and Professor Nathalie Seddon in early 2026, followed by an in-person Science Deep Dive in Oxford in spring 2026. These events will provide supporters with an opportunity to explore current research shaping the nature–climate policy landscape.
