Strengthening the future of Climate–Biodiversity–Equity Solutions through NbSI and the work of Dr. Aline Soterroni

The Families for Nature Foundation is honoured to support the Nature-based Solutions Initiative (NbSI) at the University of Oxford and the remarkable work led by Dr. Aline Soterroni.

Dr. Aline Soterroni’s addresses one of the most pressing gaps in global environmental governance: the lack of integrated models that are scientifically rigorous, socially grounded, and openly available. Her vision turns complex information into practical pathways, helping policymakers weigh trade-offs, identify synergies, and design strategies that protect both ecosystems and the people who depend on them. Her scientific contributions are already shaping high-level conversations. Aline’s research demonstrated how nearly 80% of Brazil’s net-zero target could be met through nature-based solutions, revealing the enormous potential of ecosystems to drive climate action when policies are aligned with ecological realities.

A central part of our commitment is the two-year support of Dr. Aline Soterroni’s Senior Research Fellowship at the University of Oxford from 2025 to 2027. This period represents a critical juncture for NbSI: the continuation of its flagship SYNERGIES programme.

For NbSI, solutions are not simply technical; they must be just, transparent, and rooted in respect for the people most directly affected. The next phase of SYNERGIES represents an important expansion of this mission - NbSI envisions a modelling architecture that is regional, globally consistent, and open-source, enabling a wider range of voices - governments, researchers, civil society, and local communities - to participate in shaping climate and biodiversity pathways.

Supporting NbSI and Aline is, for us, an important commitment in the scientific leadership and tools that the coming decade urgently requires. The years ahead will continue to bring major milestones for environmental policy - new national commitments, evolving biodiversity frameworks, and growing momentum to align climate and nature action. Aline’s work ensures that these global processes are informed by evidence that is accessible, socially responsible, and anchored in a deep understanding of local realities.

Their work reminds us that solutions to global challenges must not only protect nature, but also empower the people who safeguard it.
